KIKE

KIKE is a Kiswahili word that symbolizes femininity. Rafikistry’s KIKE programme is a life skills development empowerment programme for adolescent girls. KIKE (Keep In Keep Empowered) has several projects under it. These include:

> STEP [Sanitary Towels & Empowerment Project]: which was the first project under the KIKE programme and is designed to celebrate femininity. The girls are provided with sanitary towels as well as basic training comprised of how to use the products, basic hygiene and more information on the adolescent stage.

> Nawiri: Kiswahili word meaning to blossom and is designed to:

  • Celebrate femininity by honoring young girls through welcoming them to their next phase – Young Womanhood.
  • Provide contemporary rites of passage programs for teenage girls focusing on providing healthy transitions from girl to woman and look at the inner and outer changes taking place in adolescence.
  • Connect with others of similar age, and have the support of older women.

The project involves being aware of the issues today’s teenage girls are facing and being part of a group of women who are there primarily to celebrate, support and encourage participants.

The Amazing ‘BackPack’ Race

This is a sporting / challenge event targeting teenagers which is styled just like the reality TV show, in which the contestants are expected to tackle the course within the shortest time while overcoming several challenges along the way.

The specific objective for this is to help young people acquire some basic life skills by Testing and Sharpening their Navigational, Social and Teamwork Skills.

Specifically the race has the following purposes:

  • To raise participants confidence and provide an opportunity for them to participate in a developing sporting activity
  • To provide an opportunity for social interaction and development of team building, learning new skills and experience a competition environment.
  • To increase knowledge and participation in the Rafikistry Teen Centre
  • For the participants to have a fun and enjoyable day.
  • Meet new people and make new friends

Face Up! & Bling It On!

Beauty and looks seem to have caught on to everyone and the teens are not excluded. Face Up and Bling it on are activities carried out by Rafikistry to help teenagers develop skills for positive self esteem and positive body image. It aims to teach teenage girls and boys how to look good on the outside and yet recognizing that inner beauty is very important.

Inner Beauty, includes psychological factors such as personality, intelligence, grace, politeness, charisma, integrity, congruence and elegance, and Outer Beauty, (i.e. physical attractiveness) includes physical factors, such as health, youthfulness, facial symmetry, averageness, and complexion.
